The Washington boys’ basketball team opened up their season on the road last night, losing to Iowa City Liberty by a 63-55 score.

The threes were raining for the Demons in the first quarter.  As a team, they scored 15 points in quarter number one, all of which came off of threes: one each from Trevor Quigley, Brock Sobaski and Treshaun Willis, and two from Kasen Bailey.  The Demons would find a bit more variation in the second quarter, but Liberty would still hold an 11-point lead going into halftime.

But the Demons stormed back in the third quarter and brought it to within one. They took the lead on a lay-in by Luke Turner on a beauty of a pass from Treshaun Willis, but the Lightning answered with a quick lay-up on the other side to bring the score to 51-50, where it would stay until the end of the third quarter.

The momentum stalled after that.  The Lightning would go on a 10-2 run to eat up the first eight minutes of the fourth.  The Demons would start fouling with 1:13 left, and the Lightning would extend the lead.  A late Luke Turner three brought the score up a bit, but it was too little too late, and Liberty took the win 63-55.

Trevor Quigley led the way in scoring with 15 points, followed by Luke Turner with 11 and Treshaun Willis with 7.  The loss moves the Demons to 0-1 on the young season, and they’ll have a shot at redemption on Friday night when they hit the road again to take on Muscatine.  That action will be live on FM 106.1 KCII starting with the Washington HyVee Pregame Show at 7:00, tip-off at 7:30.
