The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team held their own with the previously top ranked Williamsburg Raiders Friday night in Wellman, but in the end it was the Raiders who pulled away for a 62-28 win.

Williamsburg got on the board first on the strength of their talented tailback Gage Hazen-Fabor who capped a four play 73 yard drive with a 17 yard scoring run. The Golden Hawks answered one play later when Grant Boyse ripped off a 77 yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven. Mid-Prairie turned the Raiders over when a Jordan Martin lateral pass was dropped and the Hawks recovered on the Williamsburg one. Justin Schwartz dove over the line to make it 14-7 Golden Hawks. The Raiders found the equalizer in the final two minutes of the quarter leaving things at 14 all after one. To open the second, Mid-Prairie put together their best drive of the night a nine play, 68 yard march that ended with Brad Tornow hooked up with Tom Butters from 16 yards out for the score and a 21-14 Golden Hawk lead. From that point, Williamsburg scored 48 points in a row, including ending the first half with 20 in a row to take a 34-21 lead into the break. The Golden Hawks added a late touchdown when Jaron Utzinger crashed in from two yards out. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh talked about the loss. “I thought our guys came out ready to go. We really responded. We had a big turnover early and we were able to get up. We couldn’t limit their offense, but I liked how our guys played offensively in the first half. That comes down to execution, blocking, running and catching the ball.”

Williamsburg had 28 first downs to 10 for the Golden Hawks. They outgained Mid-Prairie 500-316, including 335-173 on the ground. Gage Hazen-Fabor continued his stellar career against Mid-Prairie, piling up 250 yards and four touchdowns on 30 carries. Grant Boyse led the Hawks with a pair of carries for 79 yards and a score. Brad Tornow was 9 of 18 through the air for 107 yards a touchdown and an interception. Williamsburg improves to 3-3 on the year with the win, the Hawks fall to 1-5 as they host Eddyville-Blakesburg next week for Homecoming.
