After a wet start to September, Iowa had unseasonably dry conditions last week according State Climatologist Justin Glisan.

He adds temperatures were also warmer than normal, with the high in Clarinda at 95 degrees, nearly 19 degrees above average. Southeast Iowa’s subsoil moisture levels are below the state’s levels: southeast Iowa is currently 17% very short, 29% short, 52% adequate and two percent surplus, while Iowa’s overall levels are 77% adequate and 13% surplus. Southeast Iowa’s topsoil moistures are in better shape with four percent very short, 16% short, 76% adequate and four percent surplus. At this time last year Iowa had no surplus in topsoil moisture or subsoil moisture.
