The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington Police Department are reminding motorists that they are increasing traffic patrols around the Labor Day holiday.

Over the 2017 holiday weekend 10 fatalities occurred in Iowa, making it the deadliest weekend since 1995. Of those 10 fatalities four involved alcohol. Nationally 433 fatalities were reported in 2016 with 36% of those involving intoxicated drivers. To combat end-of-summer alcohol related fatalities law enforcement agencies in Iowa and across the nation are stepping up enforcement. Washington County Chief Deputy Shawn Ellingson reminds drivers that they want everyone to enjoy this time of year and drive sober, safely and responsibly. Officers will especially be watching for those who are impaired and those who are not using seatbelts. There will be a zero tolerance for noncompliant drivers.
