The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys soccer team wrapped up the playoffs in May of this year, but they have been hard at work over the summer with an eye toward next season.

The Hawks have been participating in a once-a-week 7 v 7 league hosted by Solon that includes teams from Cedar Rapids Xavier, Iowa City Regina, Mount Vernon and Solon. These games are played on half field with six field players and a goal keeper.

The Golden Hawks also traveled to a team camp at Luther College in Decorah last weekend. Mid-Prairie participated in the camp with teams from Park, Minnesota, Oregon, Wisconsin, Decorah High School and Clear Creek Amana. Mid-Prairie head boys soccer coach Pat Cady talked about the benefits of the camp. “It’s a great experience for these guys that go up. Three of our kids got put on a club team, and they said how much fun it was playing on a team where everyone had a great ball skill. We’re still building on a team concept, more touches on the ball. It’s a very hard camp. When we leave there on Sunday afternoon, we’re not 40 minutes down the road and everyone that’s riding with me is pretty much asleep. They have six games that they actually play over the three days. There’s college coaches there that are teaching them movement on and off the ball, passing to proper feet, there’s goal keeping coaches there from colleges, and coaches from colleges that are looking for players who may want to play at the collegiate level once they finish high school.”

The Golden Hawks finished last season with a 6-5 overall record.
