Five Iowa cities made the list of the 10 most dangerous cities in the country for cyclists, according to a report from ADT Security Services.

The Riverside Area Community Club is striving to make bike rides safer for kids in the area with an event this Sunday. RACC with the City of Riverside, Iowa Safe Routes to School, and the Riverside Fire Department are hosting a bike safety rodeo at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort. Event coordinator and Highland ESO President Maria Meller said she has long wanted to host this event, “I had put it on the back burner that I wanted to have one in Riverside and then in April there was an accident right in front of our house where the boy got hit by a truck. And Kevin, my husband, was the one who saw it and went over there, and it made me think ‘I need to do something.’ I need to make sure that these kids have helmets, that they’re accessible to them to make sure they’re safe. And luckily that boy was wearing a helmet, he went to the hospital but he had minor injuries because he was wearing it.”

Kids are encouraged to bring their bikes to the event to have them checked over and given safety demonstrations from the Iowa Bike Coalition on how to ensure bike rides are safe and fun. RACC will also be properly fitting and giving away 100 free helmets to attendees. Light refreshments will be served, the bike safety rodeo takes place from 1-3 p.m. Sunday in the casino events center parking lot.
