Washington County’s emergency communication system has outlived it’s anticipated lifespan and the county is now looking to replace it.
The 17-year-old equipment was expected to last 15 years and is housed in a building that has plumbing, electrical, and mold issues.
Mayor of Wellman Ryan Miller explains the cost of the project is figured at $10.4 million for equipment and $1,080,000 for a new technology building.Equipment figures include the cost of radio towers and radios for emergency personnel. The figures are from consultants the commission has been working with and Miller adds they’re hoping actual bids by vendors and construction costs would be less. The impact the project would have on tax payers if the county has to bond for the full amount at 3.25% for 10 years would equate to a tax levy of $65.11 per year on a $100,000 home. However, if the grant request to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation is awarded, the levy would be reduced by 22% to $50.79 per year. Miller says they’re also hoping for a lower interest rate for the county to help lower the cost.
The supervisors will consider the intent to apply for a grant and a letter of engagement of Northland Securities for funding at their meeting Tuesday. The goal of the project is to improve emergency communications to the standard 95% coverage from the 39% current rate.
