The City of Kalona has been improving pedestrian travel with their safe routes sidewalk project on 6th, 10th, and 14th Streets.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says there has been positive feedback on the new sidewalks, and that this project has spurred discussion of other areas in the city where additional sidewalks could be placed. Schlabaugh says, “We are looking to hopefully, even as early as this week or early next, be able to do some bike lane, walking lane paintings on J Avenue which is kind of the north edge of town. It’s an east-west road and we’re going to go ahead and do some painting up there. That’s going to hopefully keep the traffic separated from the walkers and bikers up there.”

Schlabaugh says the city is going to see what the response is to this alternative method, and possibly start planning a phase two of the safe routes project to install more sidewalks in the city. Schlabaugh says LL Pelling will be painting the bicycle lane this week.
