Do you have a goal for the new year or something you’re hoping to change, is there a new year’s resolution? Keep the word “smart” in mind when making goals. Make resolutions that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound says Danielle Pettit-Majewski, administrator of Washington County Public Health.

If quitting tobacco use is your goal for the new year, Sarah Smith with Prelude Behavioral Services says the benefits are nearly immediate with the heart rate returning to normal an hour after smoking the final cigarette. Smith recommends talking to your doctor for resources to help stop tobacco use. There’s also Quitline Iowa that has resources over the phone or online and the Centers for Disease Control has a QuitGuide mobile app.
