Another season of Washington Demon archery began over the weekend. The Demon high school, middle school, and Lincoln Elementary school archers traveled to Ottumwa High School Saturday for the annual Ottumwa Bulldogs Archery Tournament.

Washington’s middle school archery team bested their five-team field with a score of 3,201. The Demons posted three of the top five individual scores. Eighth grader Anna Miller was Washington’s top overall shooter, scoring 282 out of a possible 300 points. Her performance featured 14 bullseyes and was the second-best result out of 69 middle school girls competing. Sixth grader Allison Rees tallied 15 bullseyes as she scored 278, the third-best middle school girls result. Seventh grader Hunter Shultz highlighted the efforts of Washington’s middle school boys, posting a score of 272. His result was the fifth-best out of the 110-person middle school boys’ field.

The Washington High School and Lincoln Elementary squads left Ottumwa with third place finishes. The Demon high schoolers posted a collective score of 3,240, while the elementary team recorded a mark of 2,007. Freshman Samantha Mellinger had 16 bullseyes for an overall score of 281, placing seventh out of 65 high school girls. Senior John Sands had Washington’s top high school boys score with a mark of 278, the fifth-best among the 54-person field. Fifth grader Emmersyn Wenger led the Lincoln Elementary archers with a score of 232.

The Washington archery teams will host their first shoot of the season this Saturday. First flights are set for 9 a.m. at Washington High School.
