A new chapter of Washington Demon wrestling began with a dominating performance in front of the home crowd Tuesday. The Demons entertained grapplers from HLV, Benton, and Iowa Valley in a season-opening quadrangular at Washington High School. Washington, the No.10 ranked team in Class 2A, sent all three teams home with a loss.

Washington posted a shutout versus HLV, 82-0, with five falls and one major decision.. The Demons added eight wins by forfeit. The dual was highlighted by a pair of pins in under 25 seconds. Andrew Waite (152) claimed a victory over Kyler Klesner by fall in 22 seconds. Tristin Westphal-Edwards (170) capped off the dual with a 20-second win by fall over Kenneth Kriegel. Trey Van Weelden (160), Kiowa Keith (138), and Austin Hazelett (145) also won by fall.

The Demons continued with a 58-15 victory over Benton. Washington scored five wins by fall, two major decisions, a technical fall, and a decision. Waite (152), Keith (138), Alex Latchum (132), Kyle Anderson (126), and Mitchell Huisenga (285) all earned wins by fall.

Washington completed the sweep with a 60-21 triumph over the Iowa Valley Tigers. The Demons earned their points via nine pins and one forfeit. Walker Ikerd and Garrett Ikerd each pinned their opponent in under one minute. Garrett Ikerd (120) dropped Nicholas Hocamp in 25 seconds. Walker Ikerd (113) overpowered Kayne Marshall in 56 seconds. Waite (152), Anderson (126), Keith (138), Westphal-Edwards (170), Hazelett (145), and Matt Collett (106) also won by fall.

Washington returns to the mat Thursday in a showdown versus the No. 5 Davenport Assumption Knights. The Knights bested the Demons, 40-18, in the quarterfinal of last year’s Class 2A state dual tournament. First duals are set for 6 p.m. at Davenport Assumption High School.
