The City of Coralville successfully installed the Hayden Fry statue on its permanent pedestal in front of the Coralville-Iowa City Visitors Bureau. The bronze statue looks north up 1st Avenue, which was newly christened “Hayden Fry Way.” Steve Maxon of Max-Cast in Kalona, who created the statue, was on hand for the installation, and commented, “[He] looks an awful lot smaller outdoors than he did inside, but that is how it is.” Last year, the City of Coralville partnered with the University of Iowa to commission Max-Cast to build the Fry statue, and it was revealed last week at the annual FRYfest celebration. Coach Fry’s only requests for the statue were that it not look like Elvis, and that it be high enough off the ground that dogs wouldn’t pee on his shoes. Maxon is confident both wishes were granted.
