A single goal early in the match would prove to be the deciding factor in Wednesday’s postseason boys’ soccer game between the No. 4 Columbus-Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats (16-1) and the Holy Trinity Crusaders (7-12). In the 13th minute, Columbus senior Diego Sanchez sent the ball into the net for the lone goal. The assist came from the foot of Eric Cantarero, who had five shots on goal in the match.

The Wildcats’ defense was able to maintain the 1-0 lead through the second half, as Holy Trinity tried to even the score. W-MU Warren Krieger-Coble made four saves for Columbus-W-MU. So far this season, he’s only allowed nine goals to skirt past him.

Saturday, the Wildcats will host Albia (9-9) in the regional final at noon. Albia advances after defeating Danville 2-0 Wednesday. Saturday’s winner will claim a spot in next week’s Class 1A state tournament in Des Moines.
