The Keota City Council met on Monday, and one of the biggest topics of discussion was the proposed museum. Residents of the community and other interested parties were encouraged to attend the meeting and share their thoughts on the project. The residents discussed the pros and cons with the board, and many valid points were brought up. Those for the project pointed out it could be rented out for different events, it would preserve community and family history, it would have significant educational applications, and it could showcase the community as people entered the city. Those concerned about the project questioned whether there would be enough volunteer help, how it could affect the tax payers of the community, and who will be responsible for maintenance.
After the forum, Mayor Tony Cansler said they will take the information from those in attendance and use it to help make their decision as they continue to discuss the project. The museum in Keota would be unique, as communities don’t have stand alone museums that are fully funded by the government. Most are run by non profit organizations that have the advantage of finding outside sources of financing.
