The shutout streak continues for the No. 3 Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union boys’ soccer team (12-0 overall). The Wildcats welcomed their county rival the Wapello Indians (4-8 overall) to town for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference showdown. Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union held their opponent off the scoreboard for their fifth straight shutout Tuesday, defeating Wapello, 8-0.
Seven of the eight goals scored Tuesday came off the feet of two players. Junior Eric Cantarero accounted for four goals, while senior Diego Sanchez recorded a hat track. The win marked the seventh shutout for Columbus/Winfield Mount Union this spring, and the fifth clean sheet in a row. The Wildcats allowed their last goal on April 22 against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks in Wellman.
The win propels the Wildcats’ overall record to 12-0 and they enter the SEISC soccer tournament tomorrow as the top seed. The Wildcats will host the Mediapolis Bulldogs in the quarterfinal round of the event. Should they advance, the semifinal and championship matches of the conference tournament are set to take place Saturday at Central Lee High School in Donnellson.
