There are plenty of familiar faces returning to the greens this season for the defending state champion Washington Demon girls’ golf team. Four members of this year’s squad played pivotal roles in Washington winning the 2015 Class 4A state title by 24 strokes.

Washington head girls’ golf coach Len Kull is a guest on this week’s PM Sports Page, and said this year’s group will be led by a pair of seniors in Denna Peiffer and Brenna Burlingame. Peiffer enters her fourth year starting for the Demon girls’ golf team and finished among the top ten in several postseason events. She ended her junior campaign as the eighth best girls golfer in Class 4A, posting a 34 over 176 for the two day tournament held at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown. Burlingame was the Demons’ number four golfer last season, posting a 46 over 188 during the state tournament.

Arguably the best returning golfer for the Washington girls’ golf team is sophomore Sarah Nacos. As a freshman, she completed her first varsity golf season as the individual medalist of the Class 4A state tournament. Her scorecard read 13 over 155 for the tournament and included two birdies, 19 pars, and 15 bogeys. Nacos was the medalist of every meet she competed in last season.

Sophomore Megan Strabala is the final returning player for the Demon girls’ golf team. Strabala was Washington’s fifth varsity golfer as a freshman, ending the season with a 73 over 215 in the two day state tournament.

Kull said rounding out this year’s Washington girls’ golf roster includes a pair of newcomers in sophomore Allison Vogel and freshman Carly Burlingame. Vogel has played some golf previously with her classmates, while Burlingame has little prior experience.

The Demon girls’ golf team opens their competition season next Thursday, participating in an eight-team golf tournament at Elk Creek Golf Course in Keouk. Listen to an interview with Kull on the PM Sports Page, debuting tonight at 6 p.m. on KCII.
