Several area boys’ track teams will compete in Des Moines County tonight. The Washington Demons, the Columbus Wildcats, the Highland Huskies, and the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves squads will participate in the Falcon Relays hosted by West Burlington High School.

Several schools from southeast Iowa set to compete in the meet, including Central Lee, Danville, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, New London, and West Burlington/Notre Dame.

The Demons, Wildcats, and Huskies boys’ track squads were at Case Field last Tuesday, competing in the Washington Relays. Each team had a senior athlete shine in the first outdoor meet of the season. Washington’s Michael Ellingson placed second in the Class A high jump, clearing 5 feet 8 inches.

Highland’s Keiffer Sexton took top honors in the meet’s Class C distance events. His 1600 meter run time of 4:55.34 was nearly 25 seconds better than the rest of the field. Sexton set a new meet record in the 3200 meter run, clocking a time of 10:01.27, more than three seconds better than the previous record.

Columbus’ Mauricio Ramirez had a notable finish for the Wildcats in the Class C long jump. His longest leap of 18 feet 4.5 inches was the second best in the competition.

The first events of the Falcon Relays will be held at 4:30 p.m. at West Burlington High School.
