Legislation regrading broadband internet service that was drafted by Congressman Dave Loebsack (D) of Iowa, along with Greg Walden (R) of Oregon has passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The Small Business Broadband Deployment Act extends the Federal Communications Commissions exemption from its enhanced transparency rules for small internet service providers for five years.

According to a release from Loebsack’s office, the legislation allows the companies to focus on broadband deployment, while giving Congress time to evaluate the rules’ impacts on consumers. Loebsack states it is a “critical issue… especially in our rural areas.” Iowa has 134 individual small internet service providers. The goal of this is to help expand broadband service while enhancing consumer protections. The bi-partisan legislation passed the chamber unanimously.
