The Washington City Council had their first budget workshop of the year Tuesday night. City Administrator Brent Hinson presented a budget for fiscal year 2016-2017. He explained the proposal includes the Sitler Drive widening project, Avenue H reconstruction, inflow and infiltration work, water plant upgrades and architect costs for the city hall, police department and fire department project. Over half of the city’s general fund budget goes to safety measures with 32.92 % to the police, 7.15% to communications and 12.26% to the fire department.

The presentation recommended a five-percent increase for water usage and a 40-cent increase on the monthly rate for recycling, due to the anticipated costs for the 28E recycling center.

The city will move forward with budget workshops throughout February and will likely approve a final budget in March.
