The remaining undefeated team in Class A District 6 got their first taste of adversity during the 2015 season Friday. The Winfield Mount Union Wolves (5-0 overall; 3-0 Class A District 6), who allowed six points in the first four games of the season, found themselves down 20-6 at halftime to their Southeast Iowa Super Conference rival and district opponent the Lone Tree Lions (3-2 overall; 2-1 District 6) at home.

The state’s best scoring defense put the clamps down in the second half as the Wolves scored 24 unanswered points for a 30-20 come-from-behind victory. The win is the fifth straight for the Wolves,  and matches W-MU’s win total from last year.

Senior Darren Hunter carried the offensive load for the Wolves, rushing for a game high 152 yards on 24 carries and scoring one touchdown in the victory. Senior Kolt Rossiter completed nine of his 16 passes for 79 yards, throwing one touchdown and no interceptions. Junior Bryce Robinson had a team high four receptions for 35 yards.

Senior Sam Jennings led the Wolves’ defense with 10.5 tackles. The Wolves’ defense held Lone Tree running back Jared Hudson at bay. The senior, who came into the week averaging 171 yards rushing per game, was held to 70 yards on 24 carries. Hudson, who has scored 10 rushing touchdowns this season, was also held out of the end zone.

W-MU puts their undefeated record on the line this Friday in New London, battling the Tigers (1-4 overall) in a district contest. The Wolves won last years meeting, 44-6, in Winfield. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at New London High School.

The Lone Tree Lions resume district play this Friday, hosting the WACO Warriors (3-2 overall; 3-0 Class A District 6).
