A Highland wrestler finished among the best in the country in Greco Roman wrestling. Drew West completed the 2015 USA Wrestling Junior National tournament as the third best wrestler in the Junior Greco 113 pound bracket.

His lone loss came during the first match Tuesday, a 13-2 technical fall to Jordan Martinez of Colorado. In his first wrestle back bout, Drew won by tech fall 13-2 over Brenden Baker of Cedar Rapids. He continued winning in the consolation bracket, defeating Trae Vasquez of Montana by technical fall, 10-0. In the wrestle back semifinal round, Drew pinned Danny Vega of Arizona 5:14 into the match. He finished off the tournament in the third place match, conquering Jaxon Cole of Utah by technical fall 11-0 to capture the bronze medal.

Drew’s brother, Bryce West, competed in the Junior Greco 120 pound bracket. Bryce began the day in the wrestle back portion of the tournament, defeating Jake Ayers of Oregon by technical fall, 13-2. His tournament came to a close the following round as Jerry Mealey of Oregon won by technical fall, 21-10.

The wrestlers who knocked the West brothers into the consolation bracket made it all the championship match. Jordan Martinez of Colorado was edged in the 113 pound championship by Dank Punk of Illinois 2-1. Matthew Schmidt of Missouri, who defeated Bryce in the third round of the tournament, was defeated by tech fall in the 120 pound championship match by Dalton Duffield of Oklahoma.

Greco-Roman wrestling is a style of wrestling that forbids holds below the waist, a difference from freestyle wrestling found in Iowa’s high school programs.

Both West brothers have qualified for the 2015 USAW Junior Men’s freestyle championship set to begin tomorrow at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota.
