Overcoming bad outings from their two most consistent golfers, the Washington Demon boys’ golf team found a way to extend their season into next week. The Demons battled seven other Southeast Iowa high schools in the Class 3A sectional tournament hosted by Notre Dame-West Burlington. Two strokes separated second and third place as Washington edged the Clear Creek Amana Clippers and the Solon Spartans for second place in the tournament with 345 strokes. Only the top two teams advance to next week’s district tournament at the Amana Colonies Golf Course.

Washington didn’t place an individual golfer in the top five at the district tournament. Sophomore Noah Enfield had the Demons lowest score of the afternoon, shooting a 13 over 84 for the tournament and ended the day tied for ninth place. Fellow sophomore Tanner Coleman finished his day one shot behind Enfield, tying for 10th place in the tournament.

Junior Derek Anding and freshman Dalton Myers both struggled in their second full round on the Flint Hills Golf Course. Anding, who had withdrawn from the Southeast Conference meet due to illness, finished in a tie for 21st place after carding an 88 for his day. Myers finished one stroke behind Anding, tying two other golfers for 25th place. The two finished last month’s Notre Dame-West Burlignton tournament at the Flint Hills Golf Course in a tie for second place individually, scoring an 10 over 81 for the tournament.

The Mount Vernon Mustangs ran away with first place honors at the sectional tournament, shooting a 312 as a squad. The Mustangs had four of the top five individual finishers, including Connor Herman, Tommy Hook, and Riley Hauser all qualifying for the district tournament as a individual golfer. Senior Tyson Abbott of Notre Dame-West Burlington was the final individual to advance to the district tournament.

The Demons now advance to next Friday’s district tournament hosted by the Clear Creek Amana Clippers. It tees off at 9:30 a.m. at the Amana Colonies Golf Course.
