A competitively scheduled quadrangular turned into a battle of two top golf programs Monday afternoon at the Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville. According to Washington girls’ golf coach Len Kull, the four team meet between the Demons, Iowa City Regina, Tipton and Iowa City West changed to a simple dual versus Iowa City West at the final minute because of prior commitments by Iowa City Regina and Tipton. The meeting was a showdown of two of the best nine hole average teams in the state. Iowa City West, a 5A school, came into the match with the fifth best average in Iowa at 180.25 strokes, while Washington, a 4A program, had the sixth best average at 181.5 shots.

After nine holes of golf, the two teams were deadlocked at 178 strokes a piece. In high school golf, the first tie break goes to the highest score of each team’s scratched golfers. Washington freshman Megan Strabala was the Demons’ top scratch score of 58, five shots more than Iowa City West’s top scratch golfer.

This is the first loss of the season for the Demon girls’ golf team. Washington girls’ golf coach Len Kull said he was very pleased with the team’s effort despite the loss, “When you are able to perform at a high level against quality competition, it just gives you the confidence to duplicate it again the next time out.” Kull said, “We will need to because we have a lot of other quality teams left on our schedule.”

The medalist of the event was split between Washington freshman Sarah Nacos and Iowa City West sophomore Jordan Amelon, who both entered the clubhouse with 40 strokes on their scorecard. This is the fifth meet in a row Nacos has been the medalist.

The next scheduled competition for the Demon is Thursday afternoon in a Southeast Conference Triangular against Keokuk and Fairfield. The meet tees off at 4 p.m. at the Lake Cooper Golf Course in Keokuk.
