With 1.1 seconds remaining in the final quarter, the fate of the Highland Huskies boys’ basketball season came down to one final shot. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, Highland battled the West Burlington Falcons in the championship game of the Class 2A District 10 tournament Tuesday evening at Mount Pleasant High School.

Highland sophomore guard Trent Lasek’s shot a contested three pointer  before the buzzer, but it missed off the front of the rim, helping the Falcons advance with a 45-44 victory. Senior guard Jesse Wollrab scored a team-high nine points in his final game for the Huskies, while sophomore guard Bill Burton had eight points in the setback. Lasek, who played the entire fourth quarter with four fouls, scored six points in the loss.

The game featured eight lead changes and seven different ties with West Burlington taking the lead for with 9.2 seconds left as senior Da’ Shon Johnson hit one-of-two free throws to break a 44-44 tie. Johnson and senior Clay Siefken had 11 points a piece to lead the Falcons in the victory.

The win improves West Burlington to 14-10 overall and they advance to Class 2A Substate 5 game with the Iowa City Regina Regals. Highland ends their boys’ basketball season at 18-5, the most wins for the Huskies since the mid-1980’s.
