A successful season for the Lone Tree Lion boys’ basketball team (18-4 overall) continues this evening.The Lions are competing in the Class 1A District 7 semifinal round against the River Hawks of Easton Valley High School (15-6 overall).

The Lions, champions of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North, made their postseason debut Thursday with a 70-54 victory over the Midland Eagles (8-15 overall) at Lone Tree High School. Four players scored in double figures for the Lions, led by senior guard Thomas Viner’s 18 points. Senior guard Nick Viner scored 13 points for Lone Tree in his postseason opener. Senior forward Matt Wieland scored 12 points and brought down 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard Jovonte Squires added 11 points and dished out eight assists in the win.

Easton Valley finished as one of only two teams with a winning record in the Tri County East Conference, finishing the regular season with a 14-6 overall record. The River Hawks cruised into the district semifinals with a 50-28 victory over the Springfield Orioles (9-13 overall). Junior Blake Bormann leads the Riverhawks in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game.

Tonight’s Class 1A District 7 semifinal game between the Lone Tree Lions and the Easton Valley River Hawks is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. from Cedar Rapids Washington High School. Listen to KCII’s sports page tomorrow for results.
