The postseason basketball tournament for the Washington Demon girls’ basketball team (6-15 overall) begins tonight in south central Iowa. The Demons open Class 4A Region 5 tournament play in Knoxville taking on the Panthers (17-4 overall).

Washington ended their roller coaster regular season on Friday evening with a 65-42 loss to the Mount Pleasant Panthers. The loss sealed a winless Southeast Conference regular season for the Washington girls’ basketball team (0-8).

The Knoxville Panthers have had a successful first season in the South Central Conference, going undefeated in league play this season (12-0). The Panthers, who finished 10-13 last season as a member of the Little Hawkeye Conference, comes into the postseason tournament losing three of their final four games of the season. Knoxville is led in scoring by senior Meredith Cunningham, who is averaging 17.7 points per game.

Washington, whose only won six games all season, finished 3-0 versus South Central Conference competition this season including defeating Eddyville-Blakesburg (53-47), Oskalossa (57-45) and Davis County (65-48). The Demons won those games by an average of 11.7 points per game.
