Six Washington Demon wrestlers are closing in on a potential berth in next week’s state wrestling tournament in Des Moines. Senior Brad Skubal (195) and sophomores Alex Latcham (106), Andrew Waite (113), Kyle Anderson (120), Austin Hazelett (126), and Trey Van Weelden (145) qualified for this weekend’s district tournament in Fairfield.

Skubal, who finished fifth in last year’s state tournament, opens up district matches against Knoxville junior Travis Poffenbarger (31-11 overall).

Latcham (25-9 overall) is scheduled to face Chariton freshman Gabe Ruepke (19-3) in his first district bout. This is Latcham’s first appearance in the district tournament.

Waite (28-6 overall) is slated to face Chariton freshman Dylin Harberts (29-6 overall) in his first district match. Waite qualified for the state tournament in the 106 pound weight class last season as a freshman.

Anderson (27-5 overall) is set to face Albia freshman Zachary Oldham (37-8 overall) in the first district match. Anderson qualified for the state tournament in the 113 pound weight class last season as a freshman.

Hazelett (31-7 overall) has been paired up with Prairie City-Monroe senior Tristan Clark (39-2 overall) in his first district match. This is Hazelett’s first appearance at the district tournament.

Finally, Van Weelden (28-6 overall) faces Albia sophomore Kyle Sinnott (28-14 overall) in his first district matchup. This is the first appearance in the district tournament for Van Weelden.

Each district weight class includes four wrestlers with the top two advancing to next week’s state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The district meet begins at noon today at Fairfield High School. Listen to KCII’s local sports page Monday morning for results.
