Great individual and team performances the past two weekends have helped all of Washington’s archery teams to qualify for the state competition. The Washington High School, Middle School, and Lincoln Elementary archery teams competed in the Cardinal of Eldon Archery Tournament on Saturday.

Each school’s team had a good showing, with every squad finishing among the top three teams in their respective age divisions. The Lincoln Elementary team took home first place honors among the four team field with a final team score of 2804. Washington’s High School archery team placed second overall out of six competing teams, finishing with a score of 3212, 24 points behind Cardinal of Eldon for first place. Finally, Washington’s Middle School team finished third overall with a score of 2993, just 69 points away from first place Eddyville-Blakesburg, and 38 points behind second place Cardinal of Eldon.

Sophomore Grace Shafer-Smith finished as the Demons top individual archery, scoring a team-high 286 out of a possible 300 points. Shafer-Smith’s performance was not only the best in the high school division, it was the top score among the 180 girls competing. Junior Jade Wells finished with 277 points, the third best high school score in the girls division and fourth best in the overall girls division.

The team’s recent performances has helped the Washington High School, Middle School, and Lincoln Elementary archers qualify for the state competition in Des Moines on March 7. Each team had to accumulate a set number of points as a team in two tournament appearances in order to qualify for the state tournament. The elementary needed to score 5398 points and they have scored 5599 points. Middle School needed 5798 points and they scored 5989 points. High School had to get 5998 points and they scored 6442 points. This is the third straight appearance at the state competition for the Washington High School team, and the first appearance from the Middle School and Elementary teams.

The Washington Archery teams compete in their final regular season tournament on Saturday February 7th in the Springfield Tournament.
