As conventional dairy prices fall after hitting record highs last year, the price of organic dairy continues to increase. Regular milk production is up, while the organic dairy industry is dealing with a shortage caused by additional demand.

Kalona Supernatural works with 35 organic dairy producers in the Kalona area. Kalona Supernatural’s Phil Forbes says they’ve recently increased the price they pay farmers to encourage more production, which has led to a higher retail price. He explains they’re immune to the ups and downs of the conventional dairy market, which is influenced by global demand and production, as they deal directly with the farmers and retail stores.

He calls Kalona a hub for organic farming. There are 200 certified organic farming operations within a six mile radius of the city.
