Influenza is widespread in Iowa at this time according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. In the week ending December 20th, 30 schools across Iowa reported 10 percent or greater absenteeism due to illness. Lynn Fisher with Washington County Public Health explains there are different strains of the flu going around, including strains of A and B. She says there has been an increase in flu activity locally and area doctors’ offices are reporting such, including people treating at home and hospitalizations.

Fisher says the vaccine is the best way to prevent getting the flu, even though a strain has mutated. Also, she reminds people to cover their coughs and stay home when ill to prevent the spread of illness.
