Over the last three years, the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves girls’s basketball team has been a model of consistency. Since the 2011-12 season, the Winfield-Mount Union girls’ basketball team has averaged 18 wins per season, including going 19-5 last season.

Head girls basketball coach Mitch Wachs says it has been a good run for his team. “We have won 18, 18, and 19 games over the last three years.” Wachs said, “We just couldn’t make the final step to get to the state tournament each year.”

This upcoming season poses a challenge for Wachs, needing to replace seven seniors off last year’s squad, including the Wolves’ top four scorers. Wachs says this is the most senior turnover he has had in his time at Winfield-Mount Union.

“That’s a lot for a small 1A program, let alone any program in this day and age, to replace seven seniors in one season.” Wachs said, “They are gone off to college, and here we are with a new batch of kids.”

Wachs does return Karlie Wade for her senior season. Wade averaged just over four points and 2.5 rebounds per game last season.

Winfield-Mount Union opens up the regular season this evening hosting Southeast Iowa Super Conference member Highland.  The Wolves have dominated the recent series with the Huskies, winning the past six meetings dating back to the 2011-12 season. Tonight’s conference matchup between the W-MU and the Highland Huskies tips off at 7:45 p.m. in Winfield.
