The Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird and Where the Wild Things Are are all books that have been banned at one point in time. This week is Banned Books Week and the Washington Free Public Library is celebrating the freedom to read. Patrons can stop in the library and draw their concept of what the “freedom to read” means which will be displayed on a table tent.

The annual week-long event is held the last week of September and promotes the value of free and open access to information. The event began in 1982 and more than 11,300 book shave been challenged since by the American Library Association, including The Hunger Games and Captain Underpants.
