Washington County’s population has grown over the past three years according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The county’s population grew by 311 people, for a total of 22,015 in 2013. New estimates show 70 of Iowa’s 99 counties lost population since 2010. Also, the fastest growing metropolitan area in the state was Iowa City, which grew by 5.6%.

According to the Washington Economic Development Group, Washington County is the 28th largest county in the state and neighboring Johnson County grew by more than 8,000 residenst. Overall, Iowa had a net gain of more than 9,000 residents.
