A child was hit by a vehicle in rural Kalona Tuesday afternoon. The accident occurred north of the intersection of Gable Avenue and 560th Street at approximately 4:15.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, an SUV reduced its speed and entered the northbound lane of Gable Avenue to pass a group of children walking north in the southbound lane. While trying to retrieve their cap, which had blown off, one of the children ran into the path of the vehicle. The vehicle was unable to stop in time and struck the child.

The 8-year-old male was transported via Aircare to the University of Iowa Hospital. The nature of his injury was described in the State Patrol’s report as incapacitating.

Iowa State Patrol, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Kalona QRS and Kalona Fire responded to the scene.
