Washington County Secondary Roads is prepared for a long winter. Their storage building is currently holding enough salt to get the county through three average winters. Last year about 1,200 tons of salt was used on county roads. According to County Engineer, Jacob Thorius, the county spends around $120,000 on salt and $30,000 on sand annually. Thorius adds they wait as long as they can to equip their eight trucks for plowing, but notes front plows go on quickly, making them ready to jump into action should the area receive an early snow.
