The Iowa Department of Public Health has released its annual Iowa Surveillance of Notifiable and Other Diseases Report. In the state last year there were more than 79,000 reports of infectious disease. The number of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, cases increased by 344 percent over the three-year average. Last year there were over 1,700 cases of pertussis, which is a vaccine-preventable disease.

Lyme disease also saw an increase last year with 165 cases, a 68-percent increase over the previous three-year average. It is also the highest number of cases recorded since 2002.
