As we get closer to the usual peak of flu season, the disease’s activity is picking up. Washington County Public Health’s Lynn Fisher says that the State Hygienic Lab has confirmed 729 cases of influenza since September 2nd. Last week the number of flu hospitalizations more than doubled to 48. She adds the disease is beginning to have a bigger impact on the young, with 25 schools in the state reporting 10% or more of its student body absent because of the flu.

She shares that people are still coming in for their flu shots and now is as good as time as any if you want to build up immunity by the time flu season hits its peak in February. She notes it takes at least two weeks after you get the shot to build up immunity.
