With last weeks wintry precipitation the Iowa State University Extension has information on how to maintain your plants during the winter months. Homeowners can minimize salt damage by using a smaller amount of the chemical and not piling salt laden snow and ice around trees and shrubs. As temperatures warm and snow melts in the spring, vigorously water places that salt accumulates. Damage from animals such as rabbits can be minimized by placing chicken wire fencing or hardware cloth around vulnerable plants. Plants can also experience damage from the weight of heavy snows, make sure to shake heavy snowfall from branches and not to throw heavy snow onto small trees and shrubs. You can reach the Iowa State University Extension office with any questions by calling 515-294-3108.
