Despite our first dose of winter weather for the season southeast Iowa still remains mired in a drought that has lasted more than 18 months. Based on the latest figures in the water summary report released by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Washington County and all of the KCII listening area is categorized as abnormally dry. Precipitation for November in the area was below average ranging from 75% of normal in Keokuk County to just 25% of normal moisture in Louisa County. The water summary report measures the precipitation received in the state during November to be 1.07 inches of rainfall, about half of the historical average for the month. Looking into the future state climatologist Harry Hillaker expects a cooler than normal winter and that drought conditions will continue in the state into 2013.
