With kids heading for the streets tonight for trick or treating, a local police officer is offering some tips on keeping them safe. Washington Police Sergeant Shawn Ellingson says that parents should make sure their child is supervised and wearing a costume that doesn’t limit their vision.

He asks that parents walk with their child as opposed to following in a car; something he says is common and is quite often a traffic hazard. He adds during the designated trick or treating time the Washington Police will focus heavily on the kids’ safety and traffic control.

He says common sense things like staying on sidewalks and not running into the street can reduce the chance of an accident.
