The importance of avoiding distractions is the focus a special emphasis this week.  This week has been deemed as National Teen Driver Safety Week and Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says the most common distraction for teen drivers is cell phone use.  He adds another common distraction is other passengers in the vehicle.

Sheriff Dunbar says many times the drivers will want to be part of a conversation which can cause them to not pay attention to what is approaching.

He notes he has seen a small decrease in seat belt use, but adds they are effective when they are used.  Sheriff Dunbar says if anyone would like to know more about the dangers of distracted driving to contact his office.
