Governor Terry Branstad has extended a proclamation helping farmers impacted by the drought. A weight limit lift was issued for 60 days starting the end of July aimed at the transporting of hay, straw and stover.

Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius says farmers transporting these items can still carry up to 12.5% over the legal load limit with the axle weight limit remaining at 20,000 pounds.

The proclamation directs the Iowa Department of Transportation to monitor the temporary lift on all Iowa roads except interstates.

Thorius says the proclamation should be a reminder to drivers about being aware of slower moving vehicles.  The weight exemption that was to expire yesterday has been extended for 30 days.
