Harvesting of crops is starting and drivers need to be alert for farm machinery on area roads.  Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says most farmers will try to avoid traffic and stay out of the roadway but some will have to drive in the travel lanes to avoid items along the shoulder.

He says drivers should use extra caution when attempting to make a pass while the equipment is on the roads.  Dunbar notes the newer farm equipment has turn signals which help to alert drivers of possible turning.

He adds drivers should keep a safe distance when following any piece of machinery.  Dunbar says if you see any dangers while either driving farm equipment or any other vehicle, to report that to his office.
