Boyden-Hull (1A) and Mount Vernon (2A) will be bringing back some hardware for their schools after winning the boys’ state championship in their respective classes Friday night.

Boyden-Hull (26-2) did what no team came close to doing all season, defeating unbeaten Danville (27-1) 63-45.  The Comets shot over 62% for the game and ran away from the Bears in the fourth quarter, outscoring Danville 20-6 in the final frame and frustrating Michael Soukup, holding the twin to just four points on 2-of-10 shooting before he fouled out with five minutes left in the fourth.  Brent Van Roekel scored a game-high 15 points while snagging nine rebounds and dishing out six assists.

Mount Vernon (23-4) rallied from a 15 point third quarter deficit to top St. Edmond (20-7) 48-45 for the class 2A state championship.  Nick Clark scored 24 points for St. Edmond who got to the free throw line just three times as a team while Mount Vernon hit 12-of-18 from the stripe on their way to outscoring the Gaels 31-17 in the second half.  Micah Russel led the Mustangs with 19 points.

Tonight in class 3A, Epworth (24-2) tips against Mt. Pleasant (25-1) for the state title which will be followed by the 4A title game, Sioux City, East (21-3) against Iowa City-West (25-0).
