For the first time in a decade the Mid-Prairie girls basketball team stands atop the conference thanks to their 69-29 win in Wellman Monday night over Tipton. Mid-Prairie entered play tied with Iowa City Regina at 11-1. The Golden Hawks left nothing to chance jumping out to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter that ballooned to a 37-14 advantage at the halftime break. Mid-Prairie held the high scoring tandem of Brittney Miller and Taylor Doermann from Tipton to just five combined first half points and 10 for the game. Mallory McArtor had 16 points and Mariah Swartzentruber had 14 to pace Mid-Prairie. Regina was also a winner at West Branch last night giving the Golden Hawks and Runnin’ Regals both a share of the championship. It’s the first for Mid-Prairie since 2002 and just the second for the Golden Hawks since 1976. Mid-Prairie has now won 13 in a row, 15 of 16 and the Golden Hawks rap up the regular season tonight when they host the Washington Demons as part of a boy/girl double header. Catch all of the action live tonight on AM and FM KCII and KCIIradio.com.

There will be no admission charged at tonight’s games in Wellman or at the boys’ home game Friday against West Liberty. A freewill donation will be accepted for the Murray Family Fund. Suggested donation is $5. If you are unable to attend either event this week at Mid-Prairie High School and still would like to contribute, you can visit any Hills Bank location and ask to make a contribution to the Murray Family Fund there.
