Washington County farmers started this year’s growing season with concerns about cool and wet weather, but now they are worried about how this month’s heat will affect their corn.  According to a report from the Iowa Department of Agriculture, numbers indicate corn continues to show progress, as 91 percent of corn in southeast Iowa has tasseled.  That’s above the five year average of 80 percent for the region.

Joni Sandburg with the Farmers’ Coop in Ainsworth says the overall condition of crops has dropped about four percent in the last week, though, as the heat came during the pollination period for corn.

The Department of Agriculture reports 52 percent of corn in good condition, and the report says 28 percent of corn is now in excellent condition.
