The Washington County Conservation Board is having their annual Marr Park Night Prairie Burn.  Topics to be discussed include the role of fire in the prairie ecosystem, and the tools and methods involved during a controlled burn.  Ranger Bob Bellmer says it’s a management tool for maintaining prairies.

He says it burns off the old prairie grass, brings newer seed, and burns off the woody vegetation.  Bellmer also says seed production will increase as a result.  The public is invited to the burn tonight at 7pm at Marr Park and to learn more about tonight’s prairie burn, listen to today’s In Touch With Southeast Iowa program.
