Now that Christmas has passed, many people consider keeping their poinsettias.  ISU Extension Commercial Horticulture Field Specialist Patrick O’Malley says if you wish to keep your poinsettia, you should put them in a sunny window, plant them outside in the spring in a place that gets a half-day of sun, put the plant into a new pot either in the spring or fall.  He says you should also cut back the plant in the spring and again in September to encourage new growth.  O’Malley says eight weeks before you are ready for it to flower again, you will need to give the plant less daylight and keep them in a closet.  He also notes to only water the plant once a week.
