We are taking the next few days and looking back at a couple of the top sports stories for our area in 2010 each day. These twelve stories are in no particular order. Today we begin with the Mid-Praire boys basketball team.

The Golden Hawks ended the season 19-6. During the season Mid-Prairie snapped the defending state champs, the Solon Spartans’, 38 game winning streak. In the post season, the Golden Hawks started with a win over Belle Plaine 65-36. They then went on the road and beat BGM 75-38. In the district final the Golden Hawks went to Ottumwa, where they defeated Pekin 55-44. At sub-state they faced Albia in Oskaloosa, and won 46-34. At the state tournament they met up again with the Solon Spartans, it was another tight game. The Spartans were up 14 going into the fourth quarter but the Golden Hawks would have it down to a two point deficit with just over a minute left. Solon got the win 50-46 and would reach the championship game losing to Western Christian Hull. In fact something unusual happened in Iowa boys state basketball, all four defending champs returned to the title games to defend their crowns and Solon was the only one to lose. Tanner Miller led the Golden Hawks averaging 19 points per game and scoring 466. Michael Aldeman was right behind him averaging 13 a game and scoring 330 points.
