The high school football season is just less than two weeks away and this year will see a few changes. First with redistrict and reclassification, many area schools will see different opponents. For one Highland has gone up from Class A to 1A. The Huskies had been in Class A for the past four years, prior to that they were in 2A when they shared a program with Lone Tree. The Columbus Wildcats will see some new opponents. They were moved to District 5 which has Camanche, Regina, Tipton, Wilton, West Liberty, Durant-Bennett, and Louisa-Muscatine. The Wildcats had been playing in District 6 which had Mid-Prairie and Sigourney-Keota. Columbus fills a void in District 5 created by Solon moving up to 3A. The Spartans have won the 2A title the last three years and will now play in the Washington Demons’ district. The Spartans boast the longest current winning streak when you include post season games at 41 games. If you just count regular season games, they are second longest with a 28 game regular season winning streak. 8-Man’s Stanton has a 30 game winning streak. Solon last lost in the 2006 2A state title game to Central Lyon/George-Little Rock. There will one minor change that concerns the post season. When the state increased the amount of teams making the post season and it went to the top four teams from each district the created a round called sub-state which was the opening round. So technically a team didn’t make the playoffs unless they won their sub-state. This year they are removing that term and now every team that makes the postseason, is considered as a playoff team. The first week will be August 27th.
